Fake medicines worth ₹6.6 crore seized in Kolkata; Wholesale firm owner arrested

The Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), in a joint operation with the Directorate of Drug Control, West Bengal, raided a wholesale firm in Kolkata and seized ‘fake’ medicines worth ₹6.6 crore. The company owner was arrested in connection with the illegal trade.

A statement from the Ministry of Health said, "Medicines labeled as manufactured in various countries, including Ireland, Turkey, Bangladesh, and the USA, were found without any supporting documents to prove their legal import into India." Officials added that the investigating team also discovered packaging materials, raising further concerns about the authenticity of the seized products.

The Eastern Zone of CDSCO arrested the wholesale firm’s owner, who has been sent to judicial custody for 14 days by the court. This action follows an announcement by Union Health Minister JP Nadda in August 2024, in which he stated that after inspecting 400 drug manufacturing facilities in collaboration with state drug controllers, the CDSCO had carried out more than 300 enforcement actions.
